Going to have to take down the birdfeeders pretty soon, as the bears are starting to come out of hibernation, and we really don't want one up on the deck. It's been fun watching my little buddies come for breakfast every morning over the winter.
Got back to Alaska around 10pm from a week spent visiting friends and family in Wisconsin, and Lady Aurora decided to put on a nice show for my return. These were shot between 11pm and midnight. Quite a few clouds and a bright moon, but it was very strong for just a short burst. The rest of Alaska got an incredible show last night where it was clear. It's good to be home.
Sunday was the real start of the 2016 Iditarod Sled Dog Race, at Willow, about 75 miles from Anchorage. It was a gorgeous, sunny afternoon to spend on Long Lake at a Alaskan style tailgate party! Only 1,000 more miles to Nome. Mush!
It's been so long since we've seen any kind of snow. Too little, too late, though. They had to bring in 7 train car loads of snow from Fairbanks just so they could hold the shortened Iditarod Ceremonial Start tomorrow in downtown Anchorage.
Not 15 minutes after I posted the Milky Way shot and lamented that we hadn't been seeing any aurora, I looked out the living room window and this was happening! A nice little show that cranked up nicely around midnight and stayed fairly strong until 1:30 am. It never got terribly high in the sky, but some nice spikes here and there. Fun to shoot.
