My favorite day of the year here in Alaska is Winter Solstice! We get to begin our daily march back towards a summer filled with light. It will take a couple of months before direct sunlight hits our house again, but the ridges behind us that block the light are glowing this afternoon in celebration.

The sun's not very high in the sky this close to Solstice, and the days are short, but the beauty of this place never ends. The Seward Highway heading south out of Anchorage along Turnagain Arm.

The entire Anchorage Bowl has been absolutely coated with thick hoarfrost the past week. The fog has been coming up the inlet at night; coating everything it can cling to. Grabbed a couple of quick shots late this afternoon as the sun was setting. Granted, the sun sets at 3:40 pm these days. Only a week to Solstice!
