One last hurrah. Goodbye 2016.

2016 decided to put on one last really nice aurora display around 4 am this morning.  It lasted about an hour and a half.  Really active display.  None of the patterns lasted very long, but it sure was a fun one to shoot.  Here's wishing everyone a wonderful 2017.

Ice, Ice, Baby ;)

It's been a couple of years since we've tried making ice-globes for Christmas.  This year was a bit too warm, so they weren't as frozen as we thought and a couple broke when we moved them.  Devany is going to fill the broken shells with colored water and see how they look.   I love how the food coloring is compressed into a globe within a globe as the water balloons freeze solid.  The depth of the bubbles is fascinating.  A fun winter project.

The perfect Winter Solstice ending.

What better way to end my favorite day of the year than to have a pretty decent aurora display!  It's been quite awhile since we've seen them in Anchorage.  This started early--it just became visible around 9:30 pm and then really got active around midnight.  I finally gave up at 3 am.  Click on images to view full-screen.
