Back-country skijoring in Portage Valley.

We drove down to Portage Valley early this afternoon for some back-country skijoring with Xena.  Turned out that the wind was howling up on the ridges of the Chugach Mountains and out on Portage Lake, so we stayed in the woods around Moose Flats.  We had a surprise visitor on the Portage River as we were pulling in, a coyote!   A gorgeous afternoon with some really dramatic light.  Fun day.

Keeping an eye on our whales ;)

We just spent 10 days on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.  Most of our time was spent watching the Humpback whales that migrate between Alaska and Hawaii.  They eat all summer in Alaska, then head for warmer Hawaiian waters to mate or give birth--and to have some big fun.

Did you miss me?

Yes, we did!  It's been more than a month since we've had any decent Aurora here in Anchorage, so it was nice to look out the window at 10:30 pm last night and see a display starting.  Got all geared up and outside just in time for a pretty good show that only lasted about 15 minutes.  It never got really strong, and quickly died down to just a faint cloud of aurora hinting that bigger and better things might be coming, but no, it wasn't to be.  I gave up at 2:30 am.
