Backyard buffet.

We had a porcupine in the backyard this morning working on the bushes poking out of the snow. You can just see the first hints of spring growth green on the stems, but it’s going to be quite a while before the snow is gone.

Breakfast.

Our resident snowshoe hare doing a job on a black spruce this morning in the backyard. We must be nearing the bottom of their down cycle as we’ve only seen one or two consistently in the yard this winter. In their high population years we’ve had 10 or more every night.

2022 Iditarod Ceremonial Start

It was great to have the ceremonial start take place once again in Anchorage. Last year it was canceled because of COVID-19 We decided to watch the teams come down the Cordova Street hill and then along Chester Creek, instead of going to the Start line on 4th Avenue downtown. Still don’t feel comfortable in large, packed crowds.

It was snowing like crazy at the start making for fun photographs. We’re expecting up to 8” of snow today. Anyway, as usual, I’m putting up way too many pictures. Enjoy.

The supervisors came by to check on me.

We got blasted last night with 60mph winds and heavy, wet snow that left concrete-like drifts around the house. Mama Moose and Baby Bull Moose came by while I was shoveling the deck to see if I was goofing off. It’s been a tough winter on the local moose, but they both look pretty healthy. We’ve had a lot of snow this year, as you can see by the pile behind her!
